Additional Information

In a strange deviation to the normal competitive element of Spiel Ohne Grenzen, one of the games in this heat required the mayors, councillors and administrative heads of departments to grow beards. Details of the game had been forwarded to both of the competing towns some months in advance, with the teams picking the ten members that were considered to have the longest beards. So that the chosen competitors could not be changed at the last minute, they were hidden away from each other on the day until the time the game was to be ‘played’. The lengths of the beards would be measured and the team with the greater accumulated total length would win the game. With the assistance of one of their local pharmacists Heinrich Brünsing, Kempen am Niederrhein won the game thanks to a growth tincture or Wachstums-Tinktur which he had secretly mixed in his laboratory!
